The Met Gala 2019 – The art of being extra
Hello there, beauties! On May 6th all celebrities and designers have the opportunity to shine with their outstanding creations. The Met Gala is the biggest fashion event of the year and it has a specific theme, so everyone dresses accordingly. This year’s theme was: “Camp: Notes on Fashion”.
What is Camp?
If you are thinking what the hell this means, well, I did too and upon some research, I found that camp stands for “love of the unnatural, of artifice and exaggeration” (said Susan Sontag), “the triumph of the epicene style”. Others described it as something that embraces elements that include “irony, humor, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, excess, extravagance, nostalgia, and exaggeration” or simply put: be as extra as possible.
Another thing I want to point out is that this event is not for everybody. It’s not a simple ball where you dress in a beautiful gown, but the time and place where Haute Couture is the king of the ball and it dictates the rules, where designers can create the most artistic and unwearable clothes, created and designed for a special celebrity. The outfits are meant to impress, to mesmerize us with all the Swarovski crystals and in general inspire some kind of emotion.
My favorite looks
I was so curious to see Kim Kardashian this year on the Met Ball’s red carpet and she sure didn’t disappoint. What Kim wore this year is a creation of Terry Mugler called “The Wet look”. Upon first glance, I was kinda confused and had mixed feelings about it, but after understanding the inspiration behind it…OMG! Now I get it! The most notable aspects for me when it comes to this design are the tiny waist and the crystals that resemble water droplets. This is a genius design and it fits Kim so well.
On the other hand, I couldn’t help but wonder how difficult it must have been to wear such a corset and also, where are her organs at?! Nonetheless one of my favorites.
I love Celine Dion and her look was very beautiful and extra. This outfit was created by Oscar de la Renta and it was inspired by Judy Garland and the glitzy costumes of the Ziegfeld Follies. You might think the headpiece is the star of the show, but have you seen Celine’s legs? Absolutely stunning!
With the entire outfit custom-made by Gucci, Harry Styles shocked everyone this year. I most definitely haven’t seen this coming but I stan. He rocked a semi-sheer, black Gucci jumpsuit with a large bow and interesting accessories. Harry also rocked a single pearl earing a high- heeled shoes. His look gives me all Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt vibes from the movie Interview with a vampire.
Inspired from Cher’s looks from back in the day, Emily wore a custom Dundas design that was both beautiful and daring. She sparkled from head to toe in this breathtaking outfit that showed her gorgeous body. I’m thinking of putting this photo on my fridge…#absgoals.
The most daring looks
Billy Porter was at it again in a big way. After the outfit he wore for the Oscars was one of the most talked about, here he is at the Met Gala not only in a beautiful golden jumpsuit but with probably one of the most fabulous entrances of all time. As he was carried in by six men in golden pants, his long wings and bodysuit made of sequins and crystals really stood out from the crowd.
Who needs a bag when you’re carrying your own severed head as an accessory? Not Jared Lero! This time around Jared opted for a turtle neck red silk gown made by Gucci. Since this year it was all about exaggerated fashion, he sure raised up to the occasion.
As her second appearance in the Met Gala, Cardi B wore a Thom Browne large-as-sky red dress that was the recipe for a socking show-stopping moment. I know that a lot of people liked the look, but I don’t know how to feel about it. It’s not my favorite and it makes me think about the feminine reproductive system.
Katy lighted up the entire ball with her appearance, literally, by wearing multiple chandeliers. As we know Katy Perry has a hilarious sense of humor, so it kind of makes sense that she would make such a choice. But did you thought it was going to stop there? Absolutely not! After rocking the chandelier dress, Katy changed into…wait for it…a cheeseburger!
Beautiful as always, Zendaya showed up in a color-changing Cinderella gown, accompanied by a “Godfather” who created a smoke show. The dress was Tommy Hilfiger and her ‘godfather’ was none other than the stylist Law Roach.
Gaga met our expectations once again by throwing a big show with four different looks on the pink carpet. I feel like Gaga is a synonym for Met Gala, so she really put some effort to impress.
Jennifer Lopez looking flawless as always in this Versace dress. The headpiece was most definitely the star of the look.
Gemma Chan wore a very dramatic design created by Tom Ford and his team. The crown was very impressive and was inspired by the headpiece Elizabeth Taylor wore in the movie Boom!.
Salma Hayek wore a custom black and gold Gucci gown and was accompanied by her husband Francois Henri Pinault who opted for a more classic look.
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas for the first time at the Met Gala as a married couple and they sure made waves on the internet. I love Priyanka but this look was not my favorite.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looked stunning as always in an Oscar de la Renta gown.
Lilly Singh or Superwoman was dressed for her debut appearance by Moschino and she wore real Orchid flowers in her hair.
Ciara wowed with her massive afro hair and she looked like a warrior in her emerald green gown.
Met Gala 2019 is over and I already can’t wait for next year. Which one was your favorite look? If you enjoyed this article, share it with a friend and ‘till next time, stay brave & confident!
